Mission and Values

Mission

FRL advances the rural nonprofit and voluntary sector and builds sustainable rural capacity to enhance the quality of life of rural citizens.

We work with the volunteers and staff of rural nonprofit and voluntary organizations to build their knowledge, skills and capacities. Our goal is to increase the sustainability of their organizations to meet the increasing demands for their important community programs and services.

Our Beliefs and Values

We believe that the public, private and philanthropic sectors share an integrated responsibility to each other and to Canada’s environmental, social, cultural and economic landscape. We value each sector’s role in building a vital Canadian society and we value working together across all three sectors. In our behaviour, in our relationships and in our work, we espouse:

  • Collaboration
  • Citizenship
  • Leadership
  • Empowerment
  • Diversity
  • Integrity
  • Authenticity
  • Fairness
  • Respect
  • A culture of philanthropy

We believe that the nonprofit and voluntary sector makes an integral contribution to Canada’s environmental, social, cultural and economic landscape. We value the nonprofit and voluntary sector’s contribution to Canadian society.

We believe that the nonprofit and voluntary sector is built on a culture of ‘contribution to community and voluntary action for the public good’. We value the culture and practice of philanthropy.

We believe that vital rural communities make an integral contribution to Canada’s environmental, social, cultural, and economic landscape. We value vital rural communities as an essential part of Canada’s society and Canada’s national identity, and we value the qualities of rural communities.

We believe that vital rural communities are built on a number of integrated factors including the environment, access to healthcare, quality of education, a vibrant social and cultural life, and a prosperous economy, and that these factors are common to urban communities as well. We value multi-dimensional solutions that transcend boundaries of place and circumstance.

We believe that rural communities fundamentally recognize what they need to thrive and we believe that a sustainable rural nonprofit and voluntary sector that has the capacity to respond to community priorities is integral to the vitality of rural communities. We value dynamic rural nonprofit organizations that create innovative solutions to the evolving priorities of its community.

We believe that passionate people with knowledge and resources create success. We value people; their leadership, their contributions of time (both paid and volunteer), knowledge and skills, and resources (both financial and in-kind). We value their contributions and celebrate their achievements and successes.

We believe that FRL empowers people in the rural nonprofit voluntary sector through a foundation of support, knowledge and resources to act on their vision of a vital rural community. We value this responsibility in fostering rural citizens and nonprofit organizations to build vital rural communities.
