McGuinty Government Helps Students Find Jobs in Rural Ontario

Program Will Increase Skills And Support Economic Growth in Rural Ontario Source: The Province of Ontario For Immediate Release

April 30, 2004--TORONTO — The McGuinty government is helping more than 4,000 young people find jobs in rural Ontario to enhance their skills and gain valuable job experience, John Gerretsen, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced today.

“Our greatest advantage for building a strong and prosperous rural economy is our people – especially our young people,” said Gerretsen. “This program is one way we're helping students get the workplace skills and experience they need to achieve their goals."

From April to September, the Rural Summer Jobs Service program helps students ages 15-24 find work. Opportunities exist for businesses and community organizations in rural Ontario to get wage support of $2 per hour to hire students for up to 16 weeks.

This program is part of the Ontario government’s Ontario Summer Jobs program, which is investing $50 million in 2004 to assist young people across Ontario.

“By helping students succeed today, we are ensuring that Ontario succeeds tomorrow,” Gerretsen said. “That’s change that’s working. Together, we can build an Ontario that is the envy of the world, with a quality of life that is second to none.”
