11/19/2004 - With Peterborough as the backdrop, the federal and provincial governments have unveiled a major funding boost for municipal infrastructure projects.
This week's announcement highlighted an estimated $600 million more in funding for Ontario municipalities that have a population of 250,000 or less. The announcement also included a new process to streamline approving and dolling out infrastructure projects cheques.
Each level of government will provide $298 million to the program, with municipalities paying one-third of a project's cost.
Municipalities aren't the only organizations that can apply for the money. Local service boards, local roads boards and non-profit organizations can also seek funding.
To help municipalities plan, the program will accept applications at three different times -- Jan. 10, 2005, spring 2005, and spring 2006.
As well, 55 per cent of the funding will go towards "green" infrastructure such as projects related to water quality, sustainable communities, climate change and innovation.
